Using network coding to transmit data can increase network capacity.Video-on-Demand(short as VoD) with Network Coding(short as VoD_NC) is deployedpractically by Liu et al in the commercial P2P VoD, i.e. UUSee. The research proves thatnetwork coding can work well in P2P VoD. However, as for P2P VoD_NC, it is still openfor the quantitative relationship between specific scheduling algorithm design and itscorresponding performance. P2P VoD_NC adopts PUSH with PULL mechanism, whileP2P VoD adopts PULL mechanism. Whose performance is better? It is necessary tomake all the other parameters of VoD_NC and VoD as similar as possible except PUSHand PULL mechanisms for fair comparison. Nevertheless, there is no such kind ofcomparison in current literature.This thesis analyses and summarizes the current typical video system algorithm andthen designs the p2p VoD and VoD_NC system. This thesis designs different schedulingalgorithm combined with the characteristics of network coding and then implements thep2p VoD and VoD_NC system combined with packet-level large-scale P2P simulatorbased on PDNS. Especially, joining the network coding and decoding delay in the PDNScan reflect the real effect on performance of the vod system.This thesis adopts practical trace files from a popular P2P VoD company that makesthe simulation result much more confidence. This thesis gets performance of p2p vodsystem with different number of peers by running the two simulation programs with thesame of network parameters, user actions and others except the scheduling algorithm.Simulation results show that VoD_NC system can reduce control message consumptionsignificantly, improve bandwidth utilization, improve sharing data capability, reduce thecontinuity index, increase starting delay of bad computing ability peers compared to VoDsystem. However, with the better computing ability, the starting delay decreases and thecontinuity index is the same. To our surprise, as the coding and decoding delay, the peersget more data from CDN and the VoD_NC system gets more server load.
