Serial communication modules are widely used in industrial control,communications, and other testing industries, but applications in different areas, whichoften have different communication protocols, increase the cost of users and difficulty ofsystem integration. FPGA reconfigurable technology provides a feasible solution on thisissue. Because FPGA, in its running process, can reconfigure total or part of its logicresources, it makes hardware system very easily to be updated and modified, andimproves the ratio of resource utilization of the hardware system. At present,reconfigurable technology has achieved wide-ranging application in industrialmanufacturing, medical and aerospace fields, and spreading this application into thedesign of serial communication module has obvious practical value, and meanwhile itwill provide referenced value on the research of reconfigurable instrument.This dissertation analyzes present investigation and application status of thereconfigurable instrument and the serial communication module, conducts in-depthresearch for the principle and methods of the FPGA-based reconfigurable technology,and analyzes and compares different implementation methods which mainstreammanufacturers of FPGA are using. Based on in-depth research and analysis of FPGAreconfigurable technology, this paper proposes a method that can implement both localand remote reconfiguration to design a carrier board. This design uses Xilinx Virtex-5FPGA as the basis of reconfigurable hardware, constituting reconfigurable carrier boardand functional board, therefore the design improves flexibility and versatility. In thedesign of reconfigurable carrier board, the local function achieves, which is based on theSystem ACE CF mode; with the Virtex-5FPGA embedded TEMAC hard core and theopening source LwIP protocol stack Ethernet function, therefore implement the remotereconfiguration capabilities by combining System ACE CF. Including support thereconfigurable serial communication modules, the carrier board also as main controlboard connects with functional board which would be designed by different requirements,then expands functional board’s reconfigurable capability, which include the function thatone reconfigurable hardware can adopt to different models and different testingrequirements.Finally, this paper completes functional test of the local reconfiguration, the remotereconfiguration and the communication capabilities. The real testing result shows that the serial communication module not only implements System ACE CF configuration modeof local reconfiguration which is triggered by local operation, but also achieves thefunction of remote reconfiguration which receives remote configuration data via Ethernetand which is triggered by remote controller, then proves the pronounced advantages ofFPGA reconfiguration technology in many ways. This paper has important referencevalue for other researchers who engaged in this research field.
