With the development of information industry,efficiency and reliability ofservers have become more and more important.In order to improve efficiency andreliability of servers,cluster technology and cloud computing technology are bornand developing rapidly. virtualization technology which is an important technologyof cloud computing is drawing attention of people. In a virtualization environment,several virtual machines can be created on a single physical machine,and everyoperating system of virtual machines is isolated from each other and completes itsown businesses independently. Virtualization technology ensure the independence ofoperating system, and improve the rate of resource utilization of physical machines.Virtualization technology began to be widely used by enterprises. With thepopularity of virtualization technology, how to improve the reliability of the virtualmachines become an important issue that people have to face. Fault-toleranttechnology is an effective mean to improve availability of systems, fault recoverytechnology is an important research field of fault-tolerant technology. The paperwhich take improving availability of servers as the target, research the fault recoverytechnology which is working in a virtualization environment, and implement afault-recovery tool set called vfrt based on virtual machines. When a fault occurs toa server we can use the vfrt tool set to make the server back to the normal workingstate quickly, reduce the bad influence of the fault.The paper first introduces the research background, the current researchsituation of related technology at home and abroad. Then the paper do the analysisof the principles of fault recovery technology, which tell advantages anddisadvantages of different fault recovery technology, key technologies of thevirtualization technology including Xen virtual machine implementation, virtualmachine live-migration technology, virtual machine backup technology. It thendescribes the functional objectives and outline design of virtual machine-basedfault-recovery tool set vfrt. Finally, the paper describes in detail the process of thevfrt system, the design of each module in system,and the algorithms used to achievethe function. Fault-recovery Toolset vfrt according to user’s demand to providesetting the virtual machine checkpoints, live migration of virtual machines andvirtual machine hot standby function, when a failure occurs quickly restore theserver to normal operation, to reduce the impact of failure on the server. vfrt worksin the process of fault recovery considering the load balancing and workingefficiency of servers, to improve server availability and provide reliable service.
