A Comparative Study Of The Image Of Women Who Work In The Field Of Science And Technology Between Chinese And Western Media Based On Social Gender Theory

Studies of media’s "present" has always been an area which scholar concern very much. TheImage of women in media is not only related to women’s own development, but also to the developmentof human society. Nowadays, with the development of the Feminism Movement in western country,feminist media study is as a new research direction.At present, there are lot of research focus on the media image of women, but the research for theimage of women work in the field of science is less. This research is about to use the Cross-culturalstudy method and social gender theory to achieve the study goals. Content analysis and text analysismethod will be used in this research, explore the portrayal of women in science and technology inChinese and western media, discussing whether there is a deviation. At the same time, probe thedifferences and similarities of the image of women in science and technology between China and thewest in general social background. This paper discusses how to portray the image of women in the fieldof science and technology, and to advance their careers as well as to make the development of sciencehealthy and orderly.The first chapter of this thesis contains research origin, literature review, research design.Body chapter is divided into three parts:The first part is the introducing of theoretical framework and related concept: first section is abrief introduction of social gender theory; second section clarify the definition of “women who work inthe field of science and technology”.The second chapter is the study found. Analyzing newsletter or feature about women who work inthe field of science and technology in Chinese and western media in macro and micro aspects. In macrolevel is to analyses the subject and the subjective color, in micro-level is to analyses the title and text ofthe report and also, this article is about to make a comparisons by region and time span. to see thesimilarities and differences on image of women who work in the field of science and technology.The third chapter is the conclusion and revelation. As a conclusion, the image of women who workin the field of science and technology Chinese and western media shaping for us embody a strongtraces of social culture and the mainstream values, which go against the participation of women inscience and technology to some extent. So, Chinese and western media should get a social genderawareness, playing a positive role in society by being more scientific in shaping the image of women inthe field of science and technology.
