Using multiple antennas in sending and receiving terminal to transmit signal, Multiple Input and Multiple Output (MIMO) technology increases the channel capacity without power and bandwidth costs. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technique increases the spectrum efficiency and is good at combating multipath fading of the channel. The combination of MIMO and OFDM greatly overcomes the limitations while keeps their advantages. Therefore, MIMO-OFDM technology becomes the core technology in the next generation mobile communications. This thesis first introduces the development and the basic theory of MIMO-OFDM technique. After that the system time and frequency synchronization, channel estimation technique and space-time coding technique are elaborated. Combined with the design requirements, some adjustments are made in the structure of the training sequence, and some improvements were made in the realization of the integer frequency offset estimation. Finally, a MIMO-OFDM baseband system is presented on the basis of considering the complexity and hardware resources. Based on the Matlab simulation results, the implementation of each module are given and FPGA verification is completed on Xilinx Virtex-5experimental board with the help of the timing simulation by Modelsim.
