"Green Network" has emerged to become the trend of network system development. Wireless mesh network (WMN) is one of the most important technologies to solve the last mile Internet access. WMN and "Green Network" can combine with each other to reduce network energy consumption and extend application scope of WMN. In conclusion, research on energy saving strategy for WMN is a kind of study works with long significance.Basing on the in-depth study of energy efficient strategies for various wireless networks, we took power control, sleep mechanism and energy saving routing protocol into consideration. A cross-layer energy efficient mechanism for WMN was proposed, which is dedicated to energy constrained wireless mesh backbone network (WMBN). The proposed method can contribute a significant reference to the energy saving strategy research for WMN. In this thesis, the main contributions of our research works are as following:(1) Research on the theories and technical problems of existing energy efficient strategies for multi-hop wireless network. We have analyzed and summarized methods over the classification of existing strategies. (2) In order to solve energy consumption issue of IEEE802.11protocol with constant power and exclusive channel competition problem, an energy efficient MAC protocol was proposed with power control and collision avoidance (PCCA). The NS2simulation results show that energy efficiency and packet delivery radio of PCCA protocol is better than IEEE802.11protocol.(3) Based on the research work (2), we further studied the routing failure problem of sleeping. An improvement scheme has been proposed based on node sleep probability for AODV protocol (Sleep-based AODV, S-AODV). S-AODV protocol considers routing failure probability and hop count together as link quality evaluation criteria. This protocol can not only balance network traffic loads, but also can improve network energy efficiency. The simulation shows that, delay, throughput and packet delivery radio of S-AODV protocol is better than AODV protocol in the energy constrained WMBN with PCCA protocol.
