Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a large number of tiny sensor nodes dispenser-intensive in the monitoring region, through wireless communication network to form self-organizing system, the data will be collected to send to the user. Wireless Sensor Network is an integration of distributed information processing, embedded computing, sensors and wireless communications, which can be widely used in national defense and security, environmental monitoring, medical and health, industrial control, and has a high application value. Since the sensor nodes with limited energy supply and not easily replaced, so how to reduce energy consumption of WSN becomes a core issue.This paper as the background of the national"863"project ---"Smart wireless sensor network based on the greenhouse environment monitoring system and its key technology platform", analyses in-depth the characteristics and applications of WSN, and provides a research base for the design of low-power WSN, as well as how to reduce energy consumption of network system. In this paper, we detailed design a wireless sensor network platform both in the structure of hardware and system software, and discuss in-depth the key to energy saving technologies of wireless sensor network, through the analysis of the energy consumption model of each module of the nodes.Firstly, this paper introduces the background and significance in the research of WSN, as well as the research status at home and abroad, and provides an overview of the characteristics and the development process of WSN. Secondly, this paper focuses on the hardware and software system design of WSN in details. In the hardware structure, through the chip module selection and the specific circuit design of the sensor node and sink node, we build a low-power wireless sensor network platform, and give a brief summary of energy-saving strategy for the structural design of the hardware; In the software system, we design and research the driver program of the node, the minimum hop routing protocols and data packet transmission format, and the user's system software, also give a brief summary of energy-saving strategy for software system. In this paper, we study and analyze the energy-efficient methods and the energy consumption characteristics, as well as the energy-saving strategies in the data processing and data transmission areas, and give the results of my research through the simulation studies for the MAC protocol and routing protocol in the energy-saving technologies. The final content is the summary and outlook of this paper, we summarized the shortcomings that exist in this paper, and point out the direction for further study.
