Z-Wave protocol is a burgeoning new protocol for wireless sensor networks.Because most of the Z-Wave network devices are battery-powered, and the battery’senergy is limited. Therefore, how to extend the life time of the nodes in the network,and the survival time of the entire network has become a tough problem which can’t beignored.Firstly, a routing protocol of wireless sensor networks is analyzed and studied indetail, as well as its energy-saving mechanism. Secondly, the implementation of theZ-Wave routing protocol is emphatically analyzed. And the existing energy-savingmechanism is outlined and also the existing problems. Finally, an energy-saving routingalgorithm for enhancing energy awareness is given. It improves the routing process ofthe original Z-Wave routing protocol, extending the survival time of the network, andwhile ensuring the performance of the network. The main work of this thesis is asfollows.1. A routing protocol of wireless sensor networks is systematically analyzed andalso its energy-saving mechanism. Especially, the problems existed in both the routingprotocols and its mechanism is pointed out.2. The Z-Wave routing protocol is thoroughly studied, and as well as the existingenergy-saving mechanisms, which focus on the problem of the sleeping time interval,the problem of the bottleneck node and the series network overhead problem caused bythe re-routing of the network due to the movement of the node.3. For the problems in energy-saving mechanism of Z-Wave network, a kind ofenergy-saving routing algorithm for enhancing energy awareness is given. Byintroducing the "energy" and "hop count" two parameters into the routing costcalculation, as well as the weighted factor, the new algorithm optimizes the original Z-Wave routing protocol. Based on this a new kind of energy saving routing protocol isdesigned, also given the protocol message structure and routing discovery mechanism.4. The improved routing protocol is simulated in the OMNeT++platform. Thesimulation result shows that the improved algorithm is ascendant in conserving energyconsumption, protecting low energy nodes, and prolonging the lifetime of the network.
