Nowadays, with the development of wireless communication network, heheterogeneous converged network that be composed of multiple access modes hasbecome a research focus of the communications industry. There are various ofheterogeneous networks, these networks can be coordinated to complement each other,can provide users with good communication services at the same time can allocate ofnetwork resources rationally.Based on the national project "next-generation broadband wireless mobilecommunication network", the main task of this paper is establishing an integratedsimulation platform of heterogeneous network by OPNET and using WLAN and UMTSplatform to the formation of a heterogeneous environment. The simulation platformshould well reflect the characteristics of the heterogeneous network, and should havegood versatility and scalability, moreover, it can provide the platform for a variety ofresource management algorithm.Firstly this paper expounded UMTS network and WLAN network standards,summarized system architecture and key technologies, and compared the differences ofthe two networks.Secondly, this paper integrated the simulation platform, which includes twointegrated scenes of loose coupling and close coupling. Then based on the OPNETsoftware’s existing conditions, this paper combined the dual-node model simulationmodule and the module in OPNET’s model library. At last, we tested the heterogeneousand the integration of the simulation platform.Finally, this paper gave a brief analysis of the two existing radio resourcemanagement algorithms, and simulated these two algorithms. In addition, we proposedanother new algorithm and simulated it, verified the performance of our algorithm andthe validity and scalability of this simulation platform. In addition, in this paper, aselective vertical handover algorithm has been designed based on the two algorithms’drawbacks which have been summarized during simulation. It is verified that thisalgorithm can be balanced allocating network resources and effectively solve the ping-pong issue which may occur during switching.
