It is well accepted by both the industrial circles and the academic circles that the next generation of network should be Heterogeneous Wireless Networks (HWN), which can intelligently integrate the existing and the future Radio Access Networks (RAN). Heterogeneous wireless network is a very complicated system. Effective radio resource management (RRM) mechanism is needed which can provide ubiquitous wireless network service and improve system performance by maximizing the overall system capacity. The radio resource management is a key technology and a research hotspot in the HWN.In order to improve the performance and efficiency of radio resource management, this paper pays attention to radio resource management of heterogeneous wireless networks with focus on access selection, vertical handoff and admission control through tracking trends in this field at home and abroad. The content of this work is listed as follows:Firstly, this paper proposes a novel network selection algorithm for users to select the network that will maximize the consumer interest, while taking into account the QoS, charge and stability of ready access networks. We suppose service providers are competing and without fixed protocol. By analyzing the factors that influence network selection and double judging, a network selection decision-making model was founded. And the validity and accuracy of the algorithm was confirmed by the simulation.Secondly, based on analyze vertical Handoff on heterogeneous wireless networks, this paper propose a mechanism taking receive signal intensity (RSS), delaying level and delay time as handoff benchmark judgment, with the real-time traffic and non real-time traffic being distinguished during the judgment. The simulation results show that new mechanism can not only effectively prevents the occurrence of a ping-pong effect but also decreases the delay.Thirdly, after the analysis of call admission control (CAC), we propose an effective CAC scheme that is based on bandwidth reservation scheme. In addition, we propose a movable-boundary and threshold strategy for voice and data traffic, in which bandwidth is divided into three sub-pool, so as to maintain satisfactory QoS to the end user. At last this paper proposes a Markov analytical model to investigate the performance in UMTS and WLAN network for simulation. Finally, the work in the paper is summarized and future work is put forward.
