The Research Of Cheng Yanqiu And His Performing Arts By The Historical Data In Print Media From Republican Period

Since the period of Republic of China, the drama art has developed by leaps andbounds with a high speed, especially Beijing Opera which build in late Qing Dynastythrough half a century hardening, has entered its golden era, become one of the mostfashionable activities of entertainment at that time. Cheng Yanqiu is a distinguished artistof Peking Opera in China. He devoted himself entirely to Peking Opera and createdCheng Yanqiu school art system. Cheng Yanqiu has his own individual style inperforming arts which can be called unique. Besides, he is also famous for itsoutstanding innovation spirit. Cheng Yanqiu is not only an artist, but also a dramareformer and educator. The extraordinary achievements he obtained throughout his wholelife reached one of the highest peaks of the art of Peking opera in nearly hundred years.The art experience and skills that related to the performing arts about Peking Operawhich created and summed up by Cheng Yanqiu enrich the treasures of drama aesthetics.His reform thought has also made uncommon contributions to the art inheritance,innovation and development of Beijing Opera.In Republican Period, the print media plays an important role in diffusingperforming art. By using various forms, many famous Peking opera actors’ performancesand artistic images appeared in print media. The print media, especially "Declaration",become the most important communication platform of art which pay close attention tothe dynamic and development of modern opera performances. Meanwhile, it played animportant role in increasing the quantity of opera audience and improved thedevelopment of Peking Opera. Others like “369Illustrated”,”147Illustrated”,“TheatreMonthly”,“New World”,“Drama Weekly” which also take drama as the main content.These historical data contained a large number of information such as Cheng Yanqiu’sopera performances, drama criticism, advertising and so on, involving a wide rangewhich put his life and arts in the front of the audience.This dissertation includes four chapters. By the drama criticism, news and advertising in the historical data, Chapter1show the art development of Cheng Yanqiu.Chapter2choose a new angle to examine Cheng Yanqiu school art system and its statusin the history of the development of the whole Opera because of the theory innovation,performing arts and art achievements he made to improve Peking Opera. Chapter3analysis the performances Cheng Yanqiu played in Shanghai. Chapter4discuss thespread and influence about Cheng Yanqiu’s performances that caused by the media.
