Optical communication technology has been the main driver of the widespreaddeployment of optical networks and rapid development of long distantcommunication, which make the Internet become one of the most popularcommunication methods in this era. However, there are several challenges making thenext-generation Internet a necessary. One solution for the next-generation Internet isto use Optical Packet-Switched (OPS) network, which can provide an efficientallocation of bandwidth resources and decrease the power consumption. This thesis presents a practical Ring OPS network, with a simple structure and highefficiency of network resource. Moreover, this OPS network can overcome thelimitation of the Optical Random Access Memory (RAM) by using the electric RAMin edge nodes. The OPS network supported both the Gb and10Gb Ethernet with a bitrate of10Gbps.In this thesis, the networking technology and edge-aggregation technology werestudied to implement the Ring OPS network. The networking technology includes theOptical Code (OC) label technology and the high-speed optical switching technology.Meanwhile, the edge-aggregation technology was focused on the frame formatapplying to the edge node of the Ring OPS network. Finally, this thesis presents the details of the hardware and software used in thetestbed, including the high-speed optical switch, the10Gb Ethernet Interface boardand the FPGA implementations.
