General education has grown up in the United States. The early20th century, when our modern university had been established, general education was appeared in the university. In the1990s, we had localized the general education into "cultural quality education". Due to the distance of system and cognition, there are lots of problems on the practice of our universities’ general education. Comparatively speaking, the studying on practical mode of general education is more important.Studying on practical mode of general education is related to how to promote the general education of our university."Elective System" and "elite leadership" are the most important factors for the American general education, and give us great enlightenment. From the U.S.-led education mode to school-based education reform, this is the Japanese general education style, which is successful example of general education indigenization.At present, practical mode of general education in China could be roughly classified into four types:the Three-Section mode, the Experimental Classes mode, the "Undergraduate College" mode and the "academy" mode. The Three-Section mode, which is characterized by a progressive procedure:from starting optional course of general education and overall planning on university course to the education reforms. Most universities have gone through these three stages. Due to credit-based system and lacking of general education research institutions, these universities have difficulty in integrating school resources. As the name suggested, the Experimental Classes mode is featured by setting up experimental classes which is used to propel general education. Meantime, the Experimental Classes mode has two weaknesses:one is elite education tendency, the other is the difficulty of linking up between experimental classes and departments or faculties. The "Undergraduate College mode" requires all undergraduates to study General Course, which is an arduous task, so that few universities have tried. In addition, this mode could strengthen the estrangement between general education and professional education, and its core curriculum is a formidable project. The "academy mode", using students’ dormitories as general education carrier, makes innovations for our traditional student management, which is confronted with the dilemma between academic Affairs and non-academic Affairs. All of the above-mentioned mode, they have merits and demerits, in the meantime, they are restricted by many objective conditions. Taking similar difficulties into consideration, and combine the United States and Japan’s experience, we should hold the three links in general education practices:establishing the core Curriculum, promoting the reform of credit system which is focused on course selection system, creating a education mode which integrates general education and professional education.
