Based on the English study need analysis of students and social need analysis, thisinvestigation aims to analyze the English study needs of secondary vocational school studentsand find out the problems that could not meet the learning needs in teaching as well as thereasons for those problems by analyzing the learning state of secondary vocational schoolstudents, so that teachers could be more well-targeted in teaching. Furthermore, social needanalysis could help to learn about the scope and degree of English use as well as the skillsneeded in our daily life and work, which, in turn, could help to acquire beneficial information toimprove English teaching. The questionnaire on English study need analysis mainly consulted the survey on individualneed analysis of students conducted by Chen Bingbing and took it as the prototype, meanwhile, the model created by Dudley-Evans and St.John (1998) was also taken as a reference. Thequestionnaire on social need analysis consulted the survey on foreign language needs of urbanresidents made by Lu Ziwen and Zhang Ronggan. Both of the questionnaires were self-designed,modified and completed. The questionnaires on student need analysis were handed out to149oncampus secondary vocational school students in Zhangqiu First Vocational school, ZhangqiuSecond Vocational school, and Zhangqiu Third Vocational school. After the questionaires werecollected, data analysis was made with WPS form. The questionnaires on social need analysiswere handed out to170employees working in nine different companies in Zhangqiu, such asHaier Motor and Huaming Diochem.Ltd. After the questionnaires were collected, reliability andvalidity tests were taken with SPSS19.0. Results showed that the questionnaires were resonablydesigned and the data exhibited high validity.Through statistical analysis, the study reached the following conclusions:The survey on students need analysis showed that secondary vocational school students hadmastered the basic skills including listening, speaking, reading, and writing as curriculumrequired as well as correct learning strategies; But the study showed that these students only putemphasis on the instrumental value of English through the analysis of the main leaning purpose, the ability that they wish to develop and learning time. Though students’ motivation was low, their learning needs were monotonous and the learning scope was small, most of the studentswere still interested in English, though they chose English courses only to meet the needs ofEnglish tests. Moreover, there were only a small number of students who would give up Englishlearning after graduation, though English qualification is not important at all for vocational school students. The survey on social need showed that English qualification is required inemployment; English is used on many working occasions; English is mostly used in leisureactivities and entertainment in our daily life; the subjects wish to improve their listening andspeaking ability.Based on the data analysis of needs, this study proposed some suggestions on improvingcurrent English teaching: hold firm to education beliefs; conduct entry level tests; take fulladvantage of the current materials; set up appropriate teaching goals; put emphasis on students’listening and speaking skills; let the students hold dominant position in English class; varyassessment methods. This article consists of six parts.
