Under the guidance of Skopos theory, this paper analyzes the interpreting strategiesof classical Chinese poetry at the official press conferences. The language used at thepress conferences is formal and the content is highly sensitive. Therefore, theinterpreting of classical Chinese poetry brings greater challenges to the interpreter. Inorder to fulfill the interpreting task, the interpreter should take flexible measures, namely, literal interpreting, free interpreting and literal and free interpreting. Literalinterpreting can better convey the meaning and form of the original poems, whichreflects the rule of fidelity. Free interpreting enables the audience to better understandthe implication of the poems, which follows the rule of coherence. Most of the time, it isnot possible for the interpreter to use one strategy only, but to use the combination ofthe two strategies instead. In short, the reasonable use of these three strategies can betterrealize the communicative purpose of interpreting.
