New Century Novel "University Narrative" Research

Since the end of last century, with the development of market economyand the advance of colleges’and universities’system reform, the university alsohas undergone enormous changes. University which is known as the "ivory tower"former enters into the era of market economy and the popularization of educationovernight. Changes of university environment has spawned a number of " UniversityNarrative " works. This kind of novels have gained a considerable development in thenew century both in quantity and quality.This paper focuses on such a long narrative works which are published inthe new century, descripting the new century college life in macroscopic, payingattention to portray the image of the academic intellectuals and trying to explore thecore of the university spirit. This paper also intends to locate and consider the overallvalue of this kind of novels.The thesis is mainly divided into three parts. The first partstarts from summarizing and analyzing the social mirror which is displayed by thiskind of novel. Then the thesis tries to explore the abundant social life and richemotions which are contained in the new century novels of university theme.On thebasis of Xu Jilin’s dividing Chinese intellectuals into six generations, the second partsummarizes the change phenomenon of the three generation intellectuals in the newcentury university campus in the image of intellectuals as the breakthrough point.Besides, the thesis further pointes out that the same generation of intellectuals willshow general characteristics and individual differences. There are two types:Persistent Stick type and Sink Transformation type. Using narratology and theory ofaesthetics reception to analyze the narrative strategy of the new century collegetheme novels mainly, the third part point out that the view selection andtransformation in the narrative perspective, the careful arrangement on narrativetime and the irony and humor on narrative rhetoric have a good effect on the novel’s readability and artistic appeal.On this basis, this paper points out the shortcomingsof the new century novel of college theme. First, there are many similarities onwriting the life and circumstances in colleges and universities with realistic style. Second, the figures and the displayes on the inner world of the college intellectualsare flat. Third, the creation of novel is kitsch and the road of novel how to facemarketes and readers is popular.
