Stroke is a kind of psychological theory on interpersonal relationships, derived from transactional analysis. In the theory, stroking is divided into four types, giving strokes, taking strokes, asking for strokes and refusingto give strokes, with opposite poles in each type. At present, there are only a few empirical studies in America, fewer done in China. Over700undergraduate and graduate students, as participants, were tested in the study. This research used literature study, structured interviews, behavioral event interviews, open-endedquestionnaire and other methods, to explore the structure of stroking, and then to validate the stroking modelof college students by confirmative factor analysis. At last, stroking scale was developed for college students. The study comprises three parts. The fisrt one is to construct the stroking model and its scale for collegestudents; the following part is to investigate demographic characteristics of the college students’ stroking; inthe third part, we explore the relationship between stroking and interpersonal relationships using hierarchicalregression after controlling the demographic variables. The conclusion of the research:(1) Six types of stroking consist of stroking model, with opposite poles in each type-giving positivestrokes (GP), taking positive strokes (TP), asking for positive strokes (AP), refusing to give positive strokes(RGP), refusing to take positive strokes (RTP), refusing to ask for positive strokes (RAP), giving negativestrokes (GN), taking negative strokes (TN), asking for negative strokes (AN), refusing to give negative strokes(RGN), refusing to take negative strokes (RTN), refusing to ask for negative strokes (RAN). After itemanalysis, Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmative Factor Analysis, we confirm the scale’s reliability andvalidation.(2) The stroking of college students in China is above the medium level. The results show that stroking indemography, such as gender, age, educational level, hometown classification, family income, personalexpenditure, relationship status, number of family members, major background, has a significant difference.Whether or not he is a student leader or comes from a one-kid family has no significant effect on stroking.(3) By hierarchical regression analysis, the result showed in terms of controlling demographic factors, TP,RTP, AN, RGN and RTN have positive predictive effect on interpersonal problem, GP has negative effect oninterpersonal relations.
