With the increase of China’s comprehensive strength, China has been playing an increasingly prominent role in international communication, which prompts the national demand for Chinese learning and causes a worldwide "Chinese fever". However, the development of teaching Chinese as a foreign language leads to a shortage of Chinese textbooks and the unsuitability between Chinese textbooks and the students, especially the Chinese textbooks in the primary stage of learning Chinese. There also exist problems in Chinese teaching in Philippine, like the rough-and-tumble usage of textbooks, outdated contents of the textbooks, and so on. Textbooks are an important basis of teachers’ teaching and the main sources of students’ learning. So the textbooks’ compilation not only affects teachers’ teaching, but also has an important influence on students’ learning. How to compile Chinese textbooks that are suitable for students is also a main task for the research on the textbooks of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Grammar teaching has always been an emphasis as well as a difficulty in Chinese teaching. In the current stage, there is no any unified grammar outline aimed at the compilation of the textbooks of overseas Chinese teaching; nor is there any specific outline for the arrangement of the grammar items in Chinese textbooks. How to choose and arrange the grammar points which the students need is an important matter in the compilation of Chinese textbooks. This paper chooses the primary teaching material of Easy Step to Chinese—a book used in Xavier School, which is a mainstream Philippine Chinese school—to study and analyze the selection and arrangement of grammar points. In views of the selection of grammar points, due to the lack of a specific grammar outline for overseas Chinese teaching textbooks, the selection criteria of grammar items is based on HSK Grading Standards and Grammar Outline. This paper mainly studies the total amount of the grammar points selected, the grammar points selected in each class, the amount of the grammar points selected of level A and level B, and the amount of "other grammar points" selected in the primary teaching material of Easy Step to Chinese, then analyzes results and makes a conclusion. As for the arrangement of the grammar points, there is also a lack of a systematic grammar outline in the current stage. This paper integrates the opinions on the arrangement of the grammar in primary Chinese textbooks of three grammarian, Lv Wenhua, Yang Defeng, and Lu Fubo, stating that the grammar arrangement of primary Chinese textbooks should accord with the law of cognitive rule, the law of language acquisition, and the law of language itself; it studies the distribution of the grammar points in the primary teaching material of Easy Step to Chinese and the arrangement order of the specific content of grammar points, then analyzes and summarizes the results. While doing theoretical analysis, this paper also does a questionnaire survey among the Chinese teachers and students in Xavier School respectively to collect the feedback of the grammar teaching. Finally, combining the theoretical analysis with the result of the questionnaire survey, this paper puts forward some targeted suggestions for the choice and compilation of the grammar points in the primary teaching material of Easy Step to Chinese, and it is hoped that these suggestions can provide some references for compilation of primary Chinese textbooks in Philippines. This paper is divided into five parts:The first part is an introduction, which expounds the reasons for the selection of this topic and the significance of it, summarizes the current research status, and introduces Xavier School and the series of textbooks of Easy Step to Chinese. The second part is the focus of this paper, which concretely analyzes the total grammar points of the primary teaching material of Easy Step to Chinese. As to the amount of grammar points, it details each type of grammar points in each edition of the textbooks, and it makes a comparative study through showing charts. Next, according to students’usage of teaching materials in Xavier School, it analyzes the amount of the grammar points involved in each class and each grade. Finally, choosing HSK Grading Standards and Grammar Outline as the selection standard of the grammar points in primary Chinese teaching, it studies and comparatively analyzes the amount of the grammar points of level A and level B and other grammar points in the primary teaching material of Easy Step to Chinese. The third part specifically analyzes the arrangement of the grammar points in Easy Step to Chinese. Firstly, it summarizes the overall characteristics of the arrangement of the grammar points in Easy Step to Chinese, and gives examples to demonstrate it. Secondly, it summarizes the principles and requirements put forward by domestic scholars on the compilation of the primary teaching material of Chinese as a foreign language, and clarifies the principles and requirements used in this paper. Finally, it further studies and analyzes the arrangement of the grammar points in Easy Step to Chinese from two perspectives: the distribution of the grammar points of level A and level B and the specific order of the arrangement of grammar points. The fourth part is an analysis on the questionnaire. After the theoretical study and analysis, this part does statistical analysis on users’ feedback to the teaching material. This paper designs two questionnaires for teachers and students respectively, which are aimed at investigating the Chinese teachers of the primary and secondary schools in Xavier School and the students of the tenth grade in Xavier School’s respectively. And then, it does an analysis on the results after questionnaires are recycled. The fifth part mainly puts forward some targeted suggestions in the selection and the arrangement of the grammar in Easy Step to Chinese. According to the results of the theoretical analysis and the questionnaire survey, there are still some deficiencies in the selection and the arrangement of the grammar in the primary teaching material of Easy Step to Chinese. And this paper also puts forward some specific and targeted suggestions from these two perspectives.
