The Tendency And Change Of The Intelligentsia "not Talk About Politics" In The May4th Periods

After the regime of the Republic have changed hands, Chinese society enteredinto an extremely chaotic state, all people were worried about the future of china. Inthis circumstances, the intelligentsia have had a wide range of thinking on politics andculture, thus it formed a common tendency--"not talk about politics". But thistendency had changed in the rising of the May4th movement, the intelligentsiagradually abandoned their original standpoint, they began to actively participate inpolitical activities. In a not very long historical period, the ideological tendency ofintelligentsia have taken place so tremendous changes, it can not be said to be a veryunique social phenomenon.Academic circles to the tendency and change of the intelligentsia "not talk aboutpolitics" has made a lot of results, but these studies focus on a single character, oronly mentioned in some thought research works at the same time, they don’t discusssystemically on the the tendency and change of the intelligentsia the tendency andchange "not talk about politics". This paper aims at explaining the reason andmanifestations of the tendency of the intelligentsia “not talk about politics " beforethe May4th movement through the study,whcih of the objective environment theintelligentsia were facing and the relationship between politics and culture they had aprocess of long-term thinking, it reflects the intelligentsia has chosen culturalenlightenment between the two path of politics and culture to save the nation, and itreflects they has made the tremendous contribution.At the same time, this paper also analyzes the reasons,the process andsummarizes the significance and influence of the change of the intelligentsia "not talkabout politics" in the May4th movement. It holds that effective political salvation isby extensive cultural enlightenment as the prerequisite, the final destination ofpolitical salvation and cultural enlightenment is patriotic. The change of theintelligentsia "not talk about politics" in the May4th movement have conformed tothe national crisis and political situation, it also have met the people’s demand forsocial transformatio.However, the cultural enlightenment movement which by thepursuit of individual freedom and the liberation of personality has not yet completed,it had replaced by the urgent political revolution, which has become the negativeeffects the change of the intelligentsia "not talk about politics" in the May4th movement. Politics and culture can complement each other,excessive emphasis on anyone of them is not desirable, they are only not mutually exclusive to achievenational’s prosperity and civilization.
