Xu Anhua is an important representative amongst the Chinese filmdirectors,who struggled and managed to find a balanced point between literatureand commerce in HK film dom from her unique perspective as a respectableChinese female. So far, Xu has been on this business for34years, constantlybreaking through her own limits and leaving the Chinese filmdom lots of treasures.This research consists of three chapters.Chapter I starts with the course of Xu’s over thirty years’ creation which isdivided into four periods, summarizing her success and failure in each period, anddiscussing her innovation and attempts at film themes and shooting art. Owing toher wide range of film materials from deliberately-made story to everyday life, Xuhas been quite famous since she first set foot in the filmdom. But also, Xu hasstruggled and suffered quite a lot in order to seek a balance between literature andcommerce, and finally she has managed to attain the peak of her career in filmmaking both artistically and commercially.Chapter II focuses on Xu’s film subjects and themes, summarizing herachievements in filmdom respectively from humanism care, feminine perspective,and society observation. Xu is serious about film making, in which she adds herown thoughts, giving birth to such creative films that are combined with socialculture, everyday life, personal emotions, and consciousness. Taking her films forinstance, this chapter uses the social-and-historical criticism and feminism theory toanalyze Xu’s art achievements in her film making with reality.Chapter IIdiscusses Xu’s influence on the Chinese filmdom, proceeding with bothher influence on females’ film making and her illumination of Chinese filmdevelopment. What’s more, this chapter affirms Xu’s important role in the Chinesefilmdom by showing the history of Chinese film development as well as Chinese directors’ gain and loss in pursuit of ideal films.
