Yan Shu was one of the most important literati in Northern Song Dynasty, evenin The Feudal Times, he enjoyed a great reputation among his contemporary people.In recent years, the research of Yan’s poetry aroused enthusiasm among the scholars,and the research achievement of Yan’s poetry has been mushrooming. However, theresearch of Yan’s poems and proses is rare, as a result, the author attempts to attachmore importance to the research of Yan’s poems and proses, which including thebackground and source, the content and meaning, the artistic style of Yan’s poemsand proses and his status in Northern Song Dynasty literary history.The introduction sketches out the current research situation of Yan’s poems andproses and the meaning of this paper.Chapter One discusses the background and source of Yan’s poems and proses,including the influential factors from the society, the former literati and hiscomtemporary.Chapter Two analyzes the idea content of Yan’s poems and proses. Firstly, thispaper analyzes Yan’s poems and proses from four different parts: the ones Yan writedaccording to the emperor’s demand, the ones Yan produced with his literate friends,the ones Yan composed for the beautiful scenery and the ones Yan praised thefestivals. Secondly, this paper discusses the differences of the content and meaning ofYan’s poems and proses between the former and later part of Yan’s life.Chapter Three researches the artistic style of Yan’s poems and proses. Yan’spoems have a feeling of opulence and are always in leisurely and carefree mood,which also scarcely refer to stories and always use simple words to express hisfeelings. Yan’s proses also have different artistic styles for the former and later part ofYan’s life.However, there is an underlying uniformity for the style of Yan’s poemsand proses.Chapter Four depicts Yan’s status in Northern Song Dynasty literary history, hisinfluence to the later generations and the shortages of Yan’s poems and proses.
