The respected French composer Claude Achille Debussy (1862-1918) was one of the most prominent and influential composers at the turn of19th century and honored as the father of Impressionist music.Claude Debussy’s Etudes, consisted of2volumes, are a set of12etudes which are widely acknowledged as his late masterpieces. The incredibly rich and diverse musical language which has greatly promoted the expression of piano performances is considered to have high artistic value.In this article mainly focuses on the musical elements and expressions included in the1st volume of Claude Debussy’s Etudes. The article consists of3parts:The background of Debussy’s music composing and the development of etudes will be briefly described in the index. Features of music elements such as harmony, rhythm, melody, acoustics and structure included in the1st volume will be discussed in the first chapter. The2nd chapter researches on the techniques of expression of Debussy’s etudes and the research is based on touch keys and the use of pedaling.There are plenty of articles related to Debussy both from home and abroad, but most of them focused on the middle works such as Estampes, Image and Preludes. A systematic research on Claude Debussy’s Etudes and correlated papers centered on the practice of musical performance are far from enough. This article made a conclusion on features of musical elements and personal experience on techniques of expression. It is expected to provide references and contribute to a better performance of this masterpiece.
