A Report On The Translation Of Horses Of The Night

Margaret Laurence, known as "the mother of Canadian literature", has written a lot of works in her life. Lawrence’s works have been translated into many languages. This translation report takes Lawrence’s short story Horses of the Night as a case study and examines the characteristics of literary translation from the perspective of the picturesque thinking in translating. The process of translation includes translator’s literary creative ability. In order to get similar artistic effect presented in the source language/text, a translator must use visual thinking to direct the entire translation practice. The picturesque thinking in translating firstly reflects on wording and phrasing. To achieve a better aesthetic effect, a variety of rhetoric is used in original text, and the translator must take the way of picturesque management to vividly translate it. In the translation practice, the author of this report uses the amplification method which can represent the hidden meaning of the original language/text. Extended translation method is also used in this practice, so that the target language/text can successfully create and enrich the original characters’ images.
