Objective The present retrospective study aim to compare PHS and UHS for inguinal hernia repair in the late outcome and medical economics.Method The retrospective study was conducted between September2007and September2012and included105patients suffering from uncomplicated groin hernia. The patients were divided into group PHS and group UHS in light of the type of mesh(PHS or UHS) for inguinal hernia repair. The outcome parameter was the rate of seroma, scrotum edema, length of stay, and costs.Result One hundred and five patients were included in the study (PHS,53; UHS,52).There was no difference between two groups in term of demographic profile and hernia characteristics. There were no differences in the rate of seroma(p=0.125), scrotum edema(p=0.187), length of stay(p=0.134) between two groups. However, the patients in PHS group spent less money than UHS group. There were no differences between two group in hospitalization expenses except the cost of mess material (p=0.383).But PHS had a edge over UHS in the cost of mess material (p=0.000).Conclusion In this study, there was no difference between PHS and UHS in complications but costs for inguinal hernia repair. Obviously, PHS took less costs than UHS for inguinal hernia repair. In terms of results, both mess for inguinal hernia repair seemed equally effective, but PHS had a edge over UHS.
