Objective:To compare the expression of EGFL7and tumor microvascular density(MVD) between osteosarcoma group and Osteochondroma group, and to detect the correlation between MVD, clinicopathologic characteristic and the expression of EGFL7.Method:32cases of osteosarcoma paraffin specimens and10cases of osteochondroma specimens were collected from Xiangya Hospital of Central South University in2008January to2012June. EGFL7was detected by S-P immunohistochemical method in both groups. MVD were calculated by labeling tumor microvascular with the CD34antibody for all specimens. The correlation between MVD, clinicopathologic characteristic(age, surgical staging of Enneking) and the expression of EGFL7were analyzed. Results:The immunohistochemical method showed that the positive expression rate of EGFL7in osteosarcoma tissue (93.8%) was significantly higher than control group (10.0%)(P<0.01).The expression of MVD in osteosarcoma (37.38±7.20) was significantly higher than that in osteochondroma (7.97±3.67)(P<0.01). The expression levels of EGFL7were related with surgical staging of Enneking, and MVD.The rate of recurrence and metastasis in EGFL7high expression group was higher than in the low expression group.(68.4%vs40%, P<0.001) The expression of EGFL7in different age, gender and location of tumor was similar (P=0.957,P=0.597, P=0.762)Conclusion:EGFL7may play a role in osteosarcoma angiogenesis, providing a potential target for anti-angiogenic therapy for osteosarcoma. It provides new clues for searching new biomarker for assessing the degree of malignancy and prognosis of osteosarcoma.
