Objectives (1) To investigate nurses’cognitive dimension and reporting status towards the nursing adverse events among tertiary A general hospitals in Hunan Province;(2) to analyze the related factors influencing nurses’cognitive dimension and behavior of reporting nursing adverse events, to come up with some strategies and recommendations, improve the nurses’awareness and reporting behavior, thus provide a scientific basis for establishing a voluntary adverse event reporting system.MethodsA self-made questionnaire was used after literature review and expert consultation, and multi-stage random sampling method was used to investigate the prevalence of awareness of nursing adverse events and reporting rate. The survey was carried out from June2012to September2012, and clinical nurses were randomly chosen from four tertiary A general hospitals in Hunan Province.SPSS16.0was used to analyze the data. Descriptive statistics including mean, standard deviation, constituent ratio was used to analyse social-demographic characteristics; comparison of different social demographic characteristics’awareness of nursing adverse events used t-test, single-way of variance analysis. The correlation between the nurses’ report cognitive and the score of behavior of nurses adverse events used Pearson correlation analysis. Using logistic regression analysis to analyse the factors affecting nurses’report rate. All P values indicated a bilateral probability, the significance level α=0.05.Results1184questionnaire was valid and was analysed. The total awareness rate of report of nursing adverse events was89.2%, the total score was31.54±4.35, that illustrated nurses’cognitive towards report of adverse events was positive, but still need to be further enhanced. The cognitive dimension of reporting adverse events among nurses was difference among different age groups, departments, education background and regions. Those senior, highly educated nurses had the highest level of cognitive of adverse events. The nurses from the areas which economy more developed, more advantage of medical resources centralised had a higher level of cognitive dimension and reporting of adverse events.Different age, job title, region were important factors that affecting nurses’ cognitive dimension and behavior of reporting nursing adverse event. Senior nurses, nurses with higher titles had a more positive attitude towards report, nurses from the more developed and more advantages of medical resources centralised region, the cognitive dimension and behavior were more positive.Conclusion(1) Nurses’cognitive dimension towards adverse nursing events report and its reporting system was positive, it still need to be further enhanced.(2) The different age, department, education background, region were the factors influencing nurses’cognition dimension towards nursing adverse event reporting.(3) Age, job title, region were the factors affecting nurses behavior of adverse events reporting.(4)The hospital should reinforce the education and training of nurses’ knowledge and report of nursing adverse events, especially with particular emphasis on risk education and weaknesses management in the short length of work, low tide, low-educational background nurses and to ensure patient safety...
