Objective: To find out and define the aggravating or mitigating factors of TCMsymptoms, and to discuss their diagnostic significance.Methods: A database of clinical records in the past dynasties which is supported bythe11th Five-year National Science Support Project of China (No.2006BAI08B01-05) hasbeen established. According to the relevant principles, classification and naming format ofthe aggravating or mitigating factors of TCM symptoms are finished. By using phicorrelation test and chi-square test, the paper has calculated and analysed the connectionbetween factors leading to aggravation or mitigation and symptoms and syndrome factors,and did research on the connection between the aggravating or mitigating factors of TCMsymptoms and syndrome factors, namely the diagnostic significance of the aggravating ormitigating factors.Results:111aggravating or mitigating factors of TCM symptoms and24syndromefactors, including8part syndrome factors and16character syndrome factors, have beenconfirmed in the paper.Conclusions: There exist comparative stable matching relations between someaggravating or mitigating factors and some symptoms.The diagnostic significance exitsbetween34aggravating or mitigating factors of symptoms and17factors of syndrome inTCM.
