Objective: To investigate the feasibility and clinical effect of one-staged total kneearthroplasty for supracondylar or intercondylar nonunions of the femur. Methods: FromJanuary2002to October2011,17patients with supracondylar or intercondylar nonunionsof the femur,including7males and10females, aged from34to72years(average,56.9),underwent one-stage total knee arthroplasty. There were11cases ofsupracondylar fracture, and7cases of intercondylar fracture. Moreover, there were3casesof knee fibrous ankylosis with mild amyotrophy,2cases of collateral ligaments injury ofthe knee,5cases of fibrous union,2cases of infective nonunion. Results: All patientswere followed up for6to84months(average,47.1months). The HSS score improvedfrom preoperative5.21±7.32(range,0-14) to84.7±8.12(range,83-94) at final follow-up.The range of motion of the knee improved from preoperative30.3±13.7°(range,0°-44°)to100.7±8.7°(range,86°~110°)at final follow-up. There were no complicationssuch as infection, deep vein thrombosis, knee instability, component loosening andinequality of lower limb. Conclusion: One-staged total knee arthroplasty is a technicallydifficult but effective treatment for patients with supracondylar or intercondylar nonunionsof the femur.
