In the background of energy saving, lightweight design of automobile, as an important technology, has been proposed. Automotive performance, including security, power, fuel economy and handling stability, is directly affected by lightweight design of automobile. The lightweight design of automobile is based on lightweight design of components. Combined with the needs of the companies, lightweight design of operating mechanism assembly of the parking brake is conducted, the research is one part of the school-enterprise cooperation projects.The theory and method of lightweight design are studied in this paper. Combined the structural analysis modules with topology optimization module of the ANSYS finite element software, the lightweight design for the operating mechanism assembly of the parking brake is carried out, The details are as follows:First, the theory and method of lightweight design on auto parts have been studied. There are structural lightweight, materials lightweight and manufacturing lightweight. An overall lightweight design on operating mechanism assembly of parking brake, based on this three lightweight method, have been put forward.Secondly, the working principle and structure of the operating mechanism assembly have been studied. It is necessary to model finite element model of the operating mechanism assembly in accordance with the parking brake design specifications. After validation the accuracy of the finite element model, the simulations are conducted in the median lateral force working conditions, the median longitudinal forces working conditions, low stretch and high tensile working conditions. The strength-margin, structural features and lightweight value of each component in four typical operating conditions have been analyzed. The assembly which is included operation panel, the intermediate plate and mounting bracket has been conducted topology optimization with ANSYS software, and an final result of optimization is got.Finally, the optimized operating mechanism assembly of the parking brake have been modeled, After comparing the simulation results of the four typical operating conditions and modal analysis, an conclusion is got:In the situation of structural strength and stiffness of the assembly meeting the requirements, the quality of operating mechanism assembly of the parking brake decreases from1.277kg to0.845kg, the weight of assembly decreased by33.8%, which helps the enterprise save material cost more than25million per year, and greatly improve the competitiveness of their products.
