With the increase of urban population and economy, urban space is progressively spreading from urban areas to suburban areas. As in many other big cities in China, urban sprawl has occurred in Hangzhou in recent years, which leads to inefficient land use. Based on the present situation of Hangzhou, the dissertation pertinently resents urban-axial-development model combining with TOD for Hangzhou. It is very necessary to have an empirical study on the pattern of urban-axial-development.Firstly, the dissertation elaborates the characteristic of axis from three aspects (concept, structure and type) after summarizing the relative studies and practice cases from home and abroad. Besides, it points out the diversity of characteristics and functions axis presents in different city development modes and urban spatial structures. Secondly, the power mechanism studies of urban-axial-development are analyzed from the following four respects:artery traffic, land-use organization, characteristics of resident trip and relative policy-systems. Finally, the dissertation focuses on the concrete practice of Hangzhou spatial axial development from the aspect of function accumulation system and polycentric spatial organization, TOD and axial system organization, protection and use of wedge space between different axes.This dissertation aims to establish a research framework of urban axial development and strengthen empirical research by the study on Hangzhou in the crucial period of transformation, hoping to provide references and guidelines for Hangzhou and other big cities of the same stage in China.
