Residential building provide a place where people live and activities to meet the activities of the space environment for human survival needs as the goal. The uncertainty of human activity has led to the requirement for spatial form almost a dynamic process of change. Based on the architectural space needs of sustainable development, the durability of the building, functional adaptation, variability and other characteristics of the requirements have become in the process of architectural design and build an increasingly important issue.Currently, in our existing residential purposes, there have been a considerable part of the structure of different degrees of aging, functional degradation and other issues; while a large number of new residential space structure due to the fixed system, unable to meet people’s changing housing needs. How to improve the use value of residential buildings; extend its life cycle and the flexibility to change its internal space morphology residential design has become the primary focus. This will combine theoretical ideas SAR of China’s housing space of the "variability" issues were discussed. To compare with the difference between countries on residential buildings, it is found in the variability of the research and development of residential missing a reference to the traditional building, in fact, our traditional houses in the spatial separation, component composition and other aspects are still there today can learn and learn from. This article from the residential space variability perspective, combined with the spatial variability of theoretical knowledge, technical conditions and case practice, explore China variability in the development of residential building system how to experience the traditional space-separated combination of modern residential design, reached to achieve the purpose of residential space variability.
