Landscape Design Of Kanghou Retirement Community In Nanjing

As China is stepping into an aging society, old-age issue is becoming increasinglysevere. Influenced by the One-Child policy, traditional family supporting model canadapt to new situation no more. Institution endowment is becoming inevitable trend.Lots of researches have been done about buildings for the aged, but few for landscapedesign. This dissertation tries to find feasible approaches to landscape design ofretirement community by theoretical research and project practice.Firstly, the dissertation carries some research about the specified psychologicaland outdoor environment needs of elder people in pension institutions. Someexperience can be learnt from existing cases. Then further study is accomplished forhealing landscape to find corresponding proposal to improve health status of elderpeople in retirement community, both physically and mentally. Based on researchesabove, five principles for retirement community landscape design are presented.Following the theoretical study, we apply the study outcomes in real worldpractice. Kanghou retirement community is a high-end continuing care retirementcommunity in Nanjing, which is facing the typical and representative problems in itslandscape design as well. Our design aims to create a healthy and pleasant environmentfor the elderly. It is guided by the five principles and rooted in the site. All potentialdemands of elder people are seriously considered, with local culture being preserved ina modern way.
