Garden walls have been widely applied in landscape design and play an importantpart in the construction of garden sceneries and garden atmosphere. There arediversified architectural elements in traditional gardens, among which a “wall†is themost fundamental entity element. Representing the spirit of architecture, the “wall†hasunique characteristics and occupies a significant part in the architectural history. Themost evident feature of landscape architecture lies in its dual functions---practicalityand ornamental value. As a part of it, garden walls are used not only for architecturalusage, but also used to establish poetic imagery and garden atmosphere. In the art ofgarden culture,“garden walls†exist as a “space symbolâ€, which can be understood fromfour angles, the practical function, cognitive function, symbolic function and aestheticfunction.Firstly, the thesis introduces the literature review and analyzes the traditionalgardens from four dimensions, time, region, space and context. On this basis, itconfirms the research orientation and the framework of the full text. Regarding thecontent of “garden wallsâ€, there are two analytical fields: physical form and culturalconsciousness. Specifically, the interpretation is from four aspects: architectural image,space construction, landscaping artistic function and cultural connotation. What’s more,a comparative analysis of the architectural element “garden wall†is made from themacro perspective, including north versus south, modern versus traditional, and easternversus western. The study nearly covers all the elements about walls in Chinesetraditional private gardens. After studying the relation between wall and garden space, the thesis mainly discusses how garden walls create space while manifesting thecultural and artistic information. In allusion to the problems, the thesis enumeratessome cases of explicit regional colors and characteristics of the times. It is helpful tograsp the ever-changing physical forms, space features and cultural connotation of the“wall†in the historical dynasties and further understand the quintessence anddevelopment of the architectural elements in traditional gardens.Through a comprehensive understanding of the “wallâ€, a classic element inlandscape architecture, and the summarization of its essential features, the thesis mayoffer some inspiration and model standards to the construction of walls in moderngardens. Thus it affords lessons and enlightenment for modern architecture andlandscape design. Moreover, concerning the traditional context, an area of the culturalconsciousnesses, the study of garden walls is of great importance in preserving Chinesetraditional heritage and promoting the development of the culture of “wallsâ€. |
