Jiangnan private gardens are essence of Chinese classical gardens, which become the object of study by a large number of scholars. As one of the composition of Chinese classical gardens, the path connects the park attractions, organizes sightseeing routes and guides visitors to the tour sequence, so its existence can not be ignored and replaced. There are a lot of researches on the path, such as "Yuan Ye", "Jiangnan Gardens Notes", "Suzhou Classical Gardens", "Talk about Jiangnan Gardens"and so on. They are all involved in the description of the path, or focus on paving, or on function and layout, or on classification. In recent years, there are some journal articles on paving, mood and structural elements, etc, but most of these are described from aesthetic aspect, lacking objective data to support. Systematic quantitative research is still scarce, only relating to quantification in a few articles. Since the path in Chinese classical gardens can not be ignored, quantitative research of the path will help us more in-depth understanding of Chinese classical gardens and their implied regularity. Inheriting tradition is foundation of creation, and what tradition acting on modern is a worthy question of study, which is the starting point of this paper. From the foundation of the past study, this paper makes several following progresses through spot investigation and systemic theoretic analysis and research:The first, this paper use Excel data analysis software, hierarchical clustering analysis software, modulus theory, the "Chart-end" theory of gestalt psychology, topological theory and correlation analysis to research the quantization of the path in Jiangnan private garden spaces. Hopeing it has a certain use for finding their hidden regularity. The second, this paper investigates and measures ten Jiangnan private gardens of Suzhou, Yangzhou, Nanjing, Wuxi from the component form, features, function and layout of the paths, the distribution of nodes, topological properties, etc. Then we attempt to have a good grasp to the status of the Jiangnan private gardens. The third, this paper starts from "garden" spaces and "courtyard" spaces. On the one hand, we select the length of each element of the path in "garden" spaces as classification object and use hierarchical clustering analysis method to classify and then look for their common; on the other hand, we select the length of each element of the path in "courtyard" garden spaces, and then analyze its characteristic. At last we can find the similarities and differences between "garden" and "courtyard" spaces. The fourth, this paper starts between dynamic and static aspects of the landscape and people interaction. First, we can study the relationship between distribution of view points and human behavior in "garden" and "courtyard" spaces. Secondly, we can explore the relationship between the main building and adjacent nodes, and then compare with the former, analyze similarities and differences. The fifth, this paper statistics all types of expanding spaces of the path, discussing the relationship between primitive space and expanding space, and topological active analysis of the space entity factor of gallery and looking for the characteristics of path in Jiangnan private garden spaces.
