Based on the competition proposal for the museum of Anhui province, thisresearch focuses on the innovative application of patio space in architectural publicspatial design of museums, through analysis on patio space of traditional architecturecombining with inspirations it has on modern architecture design.Patio space is a typical example of traditional Chinese enclosed space and aninterpretation of the idea “integration of nature and human” in China. With thedevelopment of modern materials and technology, the concept extends to a certain level.Application methods of patio space are also updating rapidly. Patio space inspiresmodern architectural design with its uniqueness in multiple aspects: culturaltransference, creation of artistic conception, microclimate regulation, etc. The fact thatpatio space makes use of natural light has a deep impact on the design of public space inmuseums. Based on case studies of museums with skillful integration of patio space, thearticle analyses and summarizes possibilities to apply patio space in the design ofmuseum exhibition space, entrance space, rest space and traffic space. The museum of Anhui province is a part of the major culture and art project ofAnhui. The museum is charged with enormous responsibilities of preserving the richcultural heritage in Anhui and promoting Chinese culture through the design. The mainelement of it is the patio space as in traditional Huizhou vernacular dwellings. While thefacades imitate the enclosed image of the dwellings, the interior space shows greatspatial diversity through strategic combination of patio spaces. The use of patioprovides with the exhibition natural lighting as well as various spatial forms, thus moreways to arrange exhibitions and traffic flows. What’s more, the combination of patiospace and entrance space brings about the possibility to regulate interior microclimateand reduce building energy consumption. This method also creates an entrance thatmelts into local culture better. As with rest and traffic space, patio space provides goodlandscape environments and various changes of light and shadow within the building, which serves visitors with poetic mental feelings by the designing of the traffic flow.
