| West Kowloon Xiqu Center was chosen to be my graduate design. I consider thenew center as architecture of specific location and historical context. As an importantbuilding in the city, it should carry the culture and collective memory of the citizens. Aregional Xiqu performance space should be a proper identity for the new center.My thesis is a research on how to localize the typology of performance space inHong Kong. To do that, apparently we should know what the regional character ofHong Kong is in the first place. Then the problem is whether the regional space couldinspire potential theatricality, and if so, the last question is how to interpret thecharacteristics of the local space in the new Xiqu center.In the thesis, I tried to answer the three questions. By an investigation of theinfluence on the typology of architecture and morphology of the city of history, cultureand geography of Hong Kong, I come to the conclusion that Hong Kong is a highlycompact city. The inside space could be described by the volumetric logic of space,while the outside landscape is mixed and collaged.Then I find that the regional character of Hong Kong is well related to the meaningof performance in the scale of city. The volumetric logic gives a visitor3D viewpointsand a dramatic experience watching the city in movement. The mixed, collaged imagesof the city offer unique landscape, which also carry the meaning of history and culture. Ithen studied some cases, in which the relation between performance typology and citylandscape is fairly discussed. At last, in the design of West Kowloon Xiqu Center, thecompact landscape is well considered and the unique language of the space in HongKong, such as elevators, landscape-viewpoint and outdoor stairs. It’s reasonable toconclude that the aim of localizing the performance typology in the content of the city isachieved. |
