With some kinds of theories, such as City Planning, Architecture, Aesthetics, Urban Design etc, this paper assays the standpoint which our country should construct more small-scale urban squares, combined with the problems appeared in the constructing and developing of urban squares. Considering many aspects and holding the belief of"people oriented", this paper will ascertain the concept and confines of small-scale urban squares after investigation, and it can also provide theories and considerations to Chinese urban landscape planning and design, planning and design of small-scale urban square can probe a countermeasure, which can be exerted in the urban square design and construction in China.This paper defines the scope and the conception of small-scale urban squares, and suggests the area of small-scale urban square should be controled in 2500 square metres after comparing with the excellent small-scale urban squares, based on the feeling and eyesight of people. The paper analyzes the designation and the elements of small-scale urban squares in China, introduces certain design methods of elements in small-scale urban squares, such as paved landscape, plant view, water feature and recreation fercilities, gives a method of ascertaining the quantity of trees in small-scale urban square after we get the longity of recreation fercilities, and the longity of recreation fercilities equals to the perimeter of small-scale urban square.The research outputs provide useful information for solving problems including inappropriate construction sites, scale mismatch, mono-pattern, mono-function, character ambiguity, lack of facilities, and inefficient maintenance and management, etc. in urban public space designing and constructing processes.
