Tethered balloon system which severs as an ideal aerial platform can carryvarious electronic equipments and has been widely used in meteorologicalobservation and telecommunications area. In addition, it can overcome the defect ofaircraft and satellites which can not stay long time in anticipant place. Due to its goodperformance, many countries have dedicated to developing and manufacturingtethered balloon and its system. At present, lightning protection design and lightningvalidation test of the tethered balloon system remain at its immature stage. Thelightning security is one of crucial problems for the reliable operation of tetheredballoon. Once the balloon is stroked by lightning, the electronic equipments can bedisturbed and even damaged, thereby affecting the tethered balloon system reliableoperation. Obviously, to ensure the reliable operation, the rigid lightning protectionshould be taken and combined with tests to validate the effectiveness of thecorresponding protection design. Therefore, it is of great theoretical significance andengineering value for researching the lightning protection and test for the electronicequipment of tethered balloon.The lightning protection design and test validation methods of tethered ballooncarrying electronic equipments are studied in this paper. The main research areas ofthe research include the following aspects.In the field of lightning protection design, on the base of the theory methods andresearch progress on the electronic equipment lightning protection, a suitablelightning protection circuit for electronic equipment of the tethered balloon isdesigned and tested, the result of the protection reliability is improved greatly.In the field of the test validation, the related test waveform and test methods aredescribed, and the waveform generation circuit of lightning indirect effect test isdesigned which is specially customized for the tethered balloon system electronicequipment test. The high current nonlinear low inductance resistor in the circuit isspecially studied. Also, the checking tests for selected equipments are done underselected waveforms. The obtained test data and results validate the lighting protectionreliability of corresponding electronic equipment. So the test result can directly applyto practice application.
