While Chinese classical garden water design with strong regional culturecharacteristics is rarely appear. This paper through research and analysis, summed up the culture ideas and methods of classicalgarden waterscape and inheritance, and combined the feature of era with people’s demand for waterscape todesign urban waterscape with Chinese characteristics and extremely rich vitality, which has the greatsignificance for people now pursuing landscape living environment.This article first analyzes from the pre-Qin period to the Qing dynasty more than three thousandyears of development history of Chinese classical garden waters design,in which we can see during itsdevelopment artistic waterscape design be traced to the same origin, formed a very rich cultural philosophyand the concept and technique of water design. And then analyzed and summarized Chinese classical garden water design contains the following ideological characteristics:"advocating natural, humanizednature, landscape of dependency, stressing connotation, seeing big from little, winding path, payingattention to images, focusing on water,circumstances in the heart” and so on. Discussed the artistictechniques of classical garden water design by explaining the aesthetic characteristics of the water from thefour aspects" source and flow direction of the water, overall layout, water type, and other borrowinglandscape elements". These ideas and techniques in today’s domestic garden water-management still has thevalue for reference and development. For the application of classical garden water design, not only need toinherit art ideas and technique of garden water design, but also to understand the culture connotation ofclassical garden water design. Analyzed the development trend of the water design in Chinese gardens, andput forward the waterscape to adjust measures to local conditions, enhancing the improvement oftechnology and humanized design of water landscape. Then from the water resources, water purification,economic operation cultural inheritance etc. analyses and discusses the sustainable development of thegarden waterscape. Finally, taking the second phase of Kaifeng City water system as an example, analyzedthe inheritance and development of classical gardens water design application in drainageengineering,combining the theory and practice, not only creates ideas and methods inherit the classicalgarden water design, but also conforms to modern people’s aesthetic view for city waterscape.
