With the continuous pursuits of high quality of lives, the living environments have beengotten more attentions. With the leading of ecological values and ecological aesthetics, realestate landscape is growing to a higher level unity of form, function and ideologicalconnotations in the landscape design field. This paper’s purpose is to make a high quality’s’living environment by the study method of comparison and reference. The study objective isthe plants in14Nanjing typical residential areas. This paper has done a system investigationsand studies for the application status, life habit and ornamental value of middle and lowergarden plants in real estate landscape. And the existing problems and solutions of middle andlower garden plants have been made in various types of residential areas. It also provides areasonable reference for plants configuration in all types of real estates. The main conclusionsinclude six lists.1. The middle and lower classes of plant species in Nanjing residential area exist a certaindiversity. They have about178species, which belong to61subjects and113genus. Thefollowing subjects have more applications, Rosaceae, Oleaceae, Poaceae, Liliaceae,Asteraceae, Caprifoliaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Lythraceae, Lamiaceae and Magnoliaceae.Others’ applications are less than3.2. From the view of the plant’s horizontal space distribution, the middle and lower classesof plant species in villa residential area have the most application (about141species), thenext is mixed residential area (about117species), and the multilayer class residential area hasa fewer applications (about81species) compared with above two areas. From the view of theplant’s vertical space distribution, evergreen small trees, large shrub, ball shrubs, undershruband ground cover has a lot of applications, but palm plant and aquatic plant has fewapplications (4and10species separately).3. The percents of trees, shrubs and ground cover plant in the four kinds of residentialareas are similar. The biggest applications are big flowers shrubs, small flowers shrubs and small shrubs foliage. The next application is dungarunga, foliage large shrubs and ball shrubs.And the application area of flower border is smaller than above two. Since water plant isdistributed in natural water system, its application is very small and far away with flowersshrubs’ and foliage ornamental shrubs’. From the view of diversity of species, the plantspecies of middle and lower classes in villa residential area are the most, the next is mixedresidential area, and the number in multilayer residential area is the least.4. Spring and summer is the nicest time to watch flowering plants. There are about56and63species separately. In autumn there are only about22plants to bloom. There are just5plants have flowers because of the sharp decrease of temperature. From the view of colorrichness, the plants have the most colors in summer, there are red, pink, orange, yellow,purple, blue and white. Besides red items, purple items and white items have the mostpercents. And the orange items and yellow items are few.5. There are28color-leafed plants of middle and lower classes of plant in Nanjingresidential area. They are less than one quarter of foliage plants. However, the species ofevergreen plants are more than45. The percent of yellow and mosaic in colored trees is themost. The next is red items. And the blue item is a few. The plants of main ornamental leafhave8.6. The investigation result for four kinds of living areas show most of middle and lowerclasses of plants are healthy. The health level up to the excellent is about80%, the level togood is about13%, the middle and pass is5%, and the fail is only about2%. Overall thehealthy status of plants in villa residential area is the best, the status of mixed residential areais better, and the other two are relatively poor.7. Ways to improve the city residential district landscape plant diversity:(1)Attaches greatimportance to the native plants at the same time, strengthen the new superior varieties of plantintroduction and acclimatization;(2) Understand the different types of residential areas, on thebasis of functional requirements, scientific construction of plant community;(3) Meet the realestate landscape, on the basis of cost and environmental requirements, improve the level ofgarden plant configuration;(4) Pay attention to the exchanges and cooperation between eachlink landscape engineering.
