A Study On Space Construction Of Street Pocket Parks

As a practical study, this thesis is aimed at two practical problems. First, space is the finalproduct of landscape architecture. How to construct excellent space is the question that everylandscape architect should think and answer. Today’s landscape works in China often lackspace consciousness, and this fact urges us to improve our abilities in space construction.Second, public life in city is gradually declining. In old city zones, automobiles pushpedestrians aside, and new zones are often too spacious. Most street greenbelts are said to beaimed at environment beautification, and do not serve public life. With regard to the twoimportant problems, I choose space construction of street pocket parks as my topic. There aretwo reasons for my choice. First, street pocket parks are very small, and thus it is easier tostudy them. Second, street pocket parks have wide distribution and high accessibility, they arevaluable for improving public life quality in cities.The approach of this thesis is to analyze and learn from the excellent works. The maincontent of the thesis consists of four parts. At first, I examine the relevant theories, includingthe concept, characteristics, and classification of pocket parks, the value and significance ofstreet pocket parks, the types, structure, and organization of landscape space. Then, throughstudying two excellent pocket parks in Ameica, Paley Park and Greenacre Park, I find theprinciples and methods of space construction of street pocket parks. At last, throngh employingthese principles and methods to design a street pocket park in Beijing, I try to prove that myresearch conclusions are correct and useful.
