Elevators are indispensable vertical transporting facilities in cities. Along with the development of economy, the number of elevators grows day by day for their importance. At the same time, for the high frequency uses, in addition with inferior maintenance and repair services by some service suppliers, as well as the aging problems, elevators’ safety problem is emerging and increasing. As we known, more and more news on elevator accidents caused by inefficient alarm system which results in delay on malfunction repair until severe problems, even delay on rescue when people got stuck in elevator. Hence, it is of great importance to employ effective technology on elevator monitoring so as to discover faults on time or even forecast faults, realizing the innovative supervision on elevator safety.This paper introduces briefly the current status of research on elevator monitoring system. Through the analysis of elevator structure, we performed special research on factors contributing to elevator operating risks and fault logic assessment, established a database of faults, and designed the software and hardware system of monitoring and alarm equipment. We realized the elevator rescue assistance system by employing the network audio and video server based on the H.264video compression decoding technology. Through the research of four existing data transmission technologies of GPRS, TCP/IP, Power Line Communication, and3G Communications, we accomplished the design and application of data transmission. We also realized the design and application of elevator real-time monitoring and alarm system through the establishment of information management platform.Our experimental research conducted comprehensive tests on hardware and software, terminal installation and data transmission of the monitoring system. Based on the pilot application of the elevator real-time monitoring and fault alarm system, we identified system bugs and improved the function and stability of the system; and the feasibility and efficiency of the monitoring system is further validated.
