On Application Of Space Syntax In Research Of Spatial Structure Of The Residential Park

It is a bottom-up and self-organized process for people to understand and usespace, but planning and design of residential parks is, however, a top-down andhetero-organization process of space creation. In current landscape planning anddesign, there are often deviations in designers and residents cognition of space.These deviations usually result in projects which seemed convincing, but turned out tobe low in using ratio, along with demolition of landscape and residents low sense ofidentity. Therefore, in the progress of space structure cognition, it is extremely urgentfor us to find an effective way to balance these two processes.Since1970s, Bill Hillier, the representative of Space Syntax theory, from BartlettSchool of Graduate Studies, University of London, has undertaken his research onspace syntax in perspective of structuralism and positivism, which has drawnworldwide attention.Based on spatial ontology, Space Syntax is a series of theories and technologiesfocusing on the relationship between space and sociology, the core idea of which isthat, the complicated relationship between comprehensive spatial elements, other thanindividual spatial element, can determine and have full effect on socio-economicactivities. The concept of space in space syntax, is not only a object which can begauged mathematically in Euclidean geometry， but also an criteria of describingcomplicated relationship between Topology， geometry and actually distance in space.Its basic idea is to divide space and analyze the complex relationship betweensubspaces, and describe their status and function in overall space.By analyzing the Algorithms which calculate various indexes of space syntaxmodel, we interpret those indexes’ space syntax meaning in residential parks in theperspective of sociology. By comparing the statistical and field trip results gainedfrom several residential parks in Hefei, Anhui， with the Axes Map data, SegmentMap data, All-line Map data, Convex Map data， VGA Map data of those residentialparks, we eventually prove the correlation between them. Practice has proven thatspace syntax can provide us good interpretation on the number of tourists, spaces forcommunication, spatial accessibility, the walking paths and the actions of tourists anddemolition of landscape, etc.By researching and summing up the methods of constructing space syntax model,we have found a method to analyze and evaluate structure of residential parks. Butjust as the other spatial analysis methods, the space syntax analysis is inevitably limited in certain spectrum. It is hoped that this study can provide some reference inhow to apply space syntax in landscape planning and implementation, and providecertain basis to select and readjust the project of planning and design as well.
