Automobile fuel tanks, mainly including metallic fuel tanks and plastic fuel tanks currently, are the important functional parts as well as safety parts in automobile components. As traditional automobile fuel tanks, metallic fuel tanks are still widely used in medium-sized and large-sized automobiles, and what’s more, are abundant in variety and large in market demand. A great many of domestic manufacturers of automobile fuel tanks adopt traditional manual or semi-automatic devices for production which results in low productivity and poor universality, and worst of all, the product quality is difficult to be guaranteed. Therefore, the research and re-design on the control system of some key production devices for metallic fuel tank will definitely play a very important part in the improvement of production efficiency and the increase of product market share.In this paper, we take automatic feeding grinder, end cover edging machine, double-head profiling welder and occlusion forming machine of a certain automobile metallic fuel tank manufacturer as the object of study. The working principle and control process of the four devices are analyzed in detail, and the design and study on automatic control system for each device are conducted separately on that basis.First, we design the hardware system in accordance with the requirements of different devices, and conduct model selection and application design for PLC, touch screen, AC servo system, converter and other hardware in control system. Meanwhile, we complete the design of electrical schematic for each control system as well as the design and manufacture of electric control cabinet. Next, we complete the design of software system, and then, according to corresponding control requirements, complete the design of PLC and touch screen programs for four control systems based on modular structural design concept, and realize the data communication between the two at the same time. In the end, we carry out the installation and commissioning on site fully and successfully.With the control system re-designed, four devices all have achieved automatic control in production process, which greatly saves the labor and increases working efficiency. The automatic feeding grinder supports automatic assembly line control by one touch operation, e.g. automatic feeding, automatic grinding, automatic reversing, automatic stockpiling and automatic stop. The occlusion forming machine has replaced original manual-control hydraulic system via the control of servo system, and achieved accurate feeding, taking the leading position in the same industry at home and abroad. End cover edging machine, double-head profiling welder and occlusion forming machine all have achieved the machining at a constant linear velocity. The machining effect has been significantly improved and the machining quality has been guaranteed. Meanwhile, all programs have been designed with model selection function which can realize the machining for different models of products, therefore enhancing the universality of device. Now, these four devices have been put into operation, and they have been running well and won great acclaim from all personnel of the company.
