Cultural heritage, which is regarded as valuable social resources and spiritualwealth, witnesses the social change and contains a strong historical background andgeographical context. Cultural heritage interpretation, as a relatively new researchsubject, its early practice can be traced back to the1920s onwards National Park ofCanada and the United States of America. The specific research began in1950s byFreeman Tilden’s works “Interpreting Our Heritage”. Under the influence of the WorldHeritage conservation system, heritage interpretation has been paid more and moreinterest and attention at home and abroad. Some countries, such as Britain, America,Canada, Italy, Japan and so on, as the representative of the international heritageinterpretation, have gained a series of achievements and progress. The domestic heritageinterpretation started only lately, and at present is at the initial stage. Although a lot ofinvestigation and practice has been done, there is lack of systematic and in-depthresearch, public awareness and successful experience to avoid over-commercializationand the vulgarization. In recent years, owing to the globalization, the social and economy rise rapidly.Urban construction explodes, resulting in regional characteristic deletion. With the rapidincrease of China’s international status and the development of cultural tourism, regional characteristics and traditional culture get more and more attentions. There is anurgent need to explore the cultural heritage interpretation strategy in line with China’snational conditions, to dig historical information and cultural connotations. It isnecessary to reveal the values of the cultural heritage, to refine and reflect regionalcharacteristics, to transfer and inherit historical culture and humanistic spirit by theparticipation and communication of audience.Based on the basic theory of modern cultural heritage interpretation, this paperstarts from clearing the research scope and significance, combines the development andpresent situation of heritage interpretation both at home and abroad. From macro tomicro, it constructs the framework of the research with three levels: the region and thecity, the cultural heritage sites, the heritage display and technology. Taking the principleof heritage conersation, heritage interpretation, museology, museum architecture, communication, new media and other related disciplines as the theoretical guidance ofthis paper, through collecting and in-depth mining of the basic data, this study performed onsite investigation and interview. Diversified methods such as comparison, deduction and inference are employed to construct the research content of this paper.Focusing on the two typical cases: Luoyang and Chongqing as the objects, thispaper studies the methods of planning and design of interpretation for city heritage, cultural route, heritage sites, and heritage monomer etc. which cover the major types ofChinese cultural heritage. According to the analysis of the typical cases of differenttypes in Luoyang and Chongqing, combining with the international successfulexperience, the paper attempt to summarize universally applicable methods andstrategies of planning and design of interpretation for China’s national conditions. The cases analyzied in this article are limited and not comprehensive enough, butthe problems are representative and have both theoretical and practical significances forheritage interpretation. The aim of the research is to achieve more attentions ofprofessional and unprofessional personage who devote themselves to protect andinheritage precious cultural heritage of human beings.
