In the context of accelerated urbanization, medical building is one of the essentialpublic buildings in both the development of new cities as well as the renovation of oldtowns. Moreover, the outpatient and emergency building is the frequently-used one witha wide range of services in medical buildings. Due to the vast population in China, thecurrent built outpatient and emergency buildings are usually under a huge load. In thiscase, it is really crucial to have a well-designed circulation system, especially thevertical circulation, which has a vital effect on the working efficiency and spatialcomfort of outpatient and emergency building. However, there is not a relativelycomplete theoretical system with the strategy of quantity disposition in the presentdesign practice of vertical circulation in outpatient and emergency building in ourcountry. Only certain decentralized experience and similar data from other countries orother types of buildings could be found to support recent designs. Hence, the quantity ofthe vertical circulations is often difficult to meet the demands. On one hand, certainvertical circulations are always overloaded, while others are operated with no load.Firstly, with the detailed investigation of the vertical circulation in builtoutpatient and emergency buildings in our country, this essay would summary theproblems in the vertical circulation design in current outpatient and emergencybuildings of large-scale general hospitals in China, and also generalize a set of statisticaldata, integrating with the existing ideas of research, for the vertical circulation design.Furthermore, the complete practical strategy of quantity disposition for the verticalcirculation in outpatient and emergency buildings of large-scale general hospitals inChina would be formed, through the synthesis, refining and simplifying of the researchon escalators, elevators and stairways, integrated with the design rules of outpatient andemergency buildings of large-scale general hospitals in China. This strategy will beexplained in detail via the quantity deposition of the vertical circulations in theoutpatient and emergency building in Chongqing Fuling Central Hospital, accompaniedwith the configuration program and configuration table of the vertical circulation inoutpatient and emergency buildings of large-scale general hospitals, in order to be usedin the future design practice. Last but not the least, with the problems found in theinvestigation, the original design of the vertical circulation in outpatient and emergencybuilding and other man-made factors affecting on the load of vertical circulation would be discussed in this essay. Integrated with the outpatient and emergency building designin Chongqing Fuling Central Hospital, the correlative design principles and measureswould also be debated in detail.
