and outflow. Besides, the intake/outlet has complicated hydraulic characteristics because it must adjust the frequent and large changing of water level. In a word, the intake/outlet has a very important position in the design of the pumped storage plant. We must focus on improving the shape of the intake/outlet.This paper describes mainly the side intake/outlet of the upper reservoir of Dunhua pumped storage plant. The hydraulic characteristics of the intake/outlet in the upper reservoir are analogized with three-dimensional k-εturbulent model. The running conditions of pumping and generation of the pumped storage plant are simulated. The effecting on water head loss, flow pattern and velocity distribution is studied. On that basis, the original sharp is optimized and put forward the optimal sharp.First, the original intake/outlet of Dunhua pumped storage plant is studied. The results show that, the outflow will separate from the wall of intake/outlet and occur back flow, and the velocity is not uniform distribution on the running condition of pumping. In the next place, on the basis of original intake/outlet shape, to extend the diffuser, change the vertical diffusion angle of the diffusion portion, add the adjustment and convert the size of intake/outlet to optimize the project. Finally, the optimal shape is simulated. The result shows that the water head loss is decreased, the flow pattern is improved and the back flow is disappeared. Besides, the flow distribution of intake/outlet difference is less than 10%. In a word, the hydraulic characteristics can be improved by adjusting the intake/outlet.
