With the rapid development of economy,the electricity demand in China is growing rapidly and demand for peaking power system to fill the valley is also increasing. Economy and flexibility of pumped storage plant is gradually reflected.The development of new energy such as nuclear power and wind power and energy storage industries promote the construction of pumped storage plant.Pumped storage plant can be divied into plants with side inlet/outlet and vertical inlet/outlet according to the forms of inlet and oulet.In china,the side inlet/outlet has a wide adoption.This paper describes mainly the side inlet/outlet of the upper reservoir of Wengdeng power storage plant.The hydraulic characteristics of the side inlet/outlet in the upper reservoir are analoged with three-dimensional k-? turbulent model.First, the hydraulic characteristics of the original project is studied in the conditions of pumping and generation. In pumping conditions,there exists back flow in the trash rack section and the velocity is not uniform distribution and so on.Based on the original scheme of inlet/outlet,by changing the diffusion section of bottom slope to optimize the project.The results show that the bottom slope of the diffusion can improve the flow and the distribution obviously.
