Ice damage was the common problem of small hydropower station in winter in north cold area.PuShihe pumped storage power stationwasabout in 40.70° in north latitudefrom the latitude division. This region had a long time freeze-up period in upper reservoir and lower reservoir in a year.So, this study was tight around the center problem of "the effects on power stationrunning in winter".Collecting meteorological statistical data of many years in Kuandian county, monitored the reservoir temperature, wind speed and other meteorological elements from October 2012 to April 2013, researchedupper reservoir running in winter and the characteristics of the reservoir water temperature and velocity distribution, monitored the effects characteristicsof panel and sealing structure, gate shaft and bank slope by upper reservoir ice pressure, observed and analyzed ice layer dynamic condition in upper reservoir, and constructed pumped storage power station ice thickness predition model in upper reservoir for the first time,proposed rational suggestions for Pushihe pumped storage power station running in winter.The research results showedas follow:1. The PuShihe upper reservoir had not found ice flowers, so there was no ice flowers effect on power station running.Through the field observation and calculation analysis, the ice cubes would not dive and not affect the normal operation of the trash rack and the power unit. The ice pressure on upper reservoir building was smaller, so it posed no threat to the buildings such aspanel gate shaft. In observation period, the dry masonry revetmentin the changed water level area surrounding the reservoir bank appeared the slight damage phenomenon of single block pulling out, and it had no direct effect on the power station operation.2. This project conducted the relevant research of pumped storage power station runnong by upper reservoir freeze in cold region in winter, especially established pumped storage power station upper reservoir ice thickness prediction model in cold region. This research had guilding meaning and significance for reference for ice condition prediction and cold damage prevention in PuShihe power station and other stationsin cold region.3. The research results showed that:the winter in 2012-2013 was the the coldest in recent 25 years, and the power station existing running mode in winter was feasible.
