The pumped storage plant has been introduced for more than 100 years since1882 in Europe. More and more countries pay attention to the pumped storage plant, because of its hump modulation to electric network and huge economic benefits.Based its pattern of intake, pumped storage plant can be classified to lateral pipeintake and vertical pipe intake. The vertical pipe intake can be classified to openintake and intake with plate. In China, the pumped storage plant was adopted in the 1970s. The pumpedstorage plant with lateral pipe intake is applied more expansively than that withvertical pipe intake. There has been not a practical project of vertical pipe intake withplate of pumped storage plant in China until now. At present, the main way to study on pumped storage plant is physical model test.In this paper, the hydraulic characteristics, including head loss and velocitydistribution, at the vertical pipe intake with plate of Xilongchi Pumped Storage Plantare investigated by physical model test and numerical simulation. In the model test, itis found that there are no harmful air vortices at the intakes and two circulation flowswith low velocity circling the two intakes on surface under the powering condition;and there are no obvious circulation flows under the pumping condition. But underthe pumping condition there are reverse velocity zones near the bottom plate, and theoutflow of 8 openings is uneven. Based on the physical model test, numerical simulation is conducted on thevertical pipe intake of Xilongchi Pumped Storage Plant, and its result is accordantwith the result of model test. The hydraulic characteristics about the intake are studiedin this paper and some conclusions are deduced.
